Inspiring Productivity and Purpose
Jeff Sattler considers himself a businessman, not a banker. And yet, he had a vision to start a privately held bank to serve the needs of small businesses and startups in the community. Sattler was formerly a Vice President of TD Bank. When he left to begin as President of NUVO Bank, he spearheaded a capital raise and created a profitable model that is well poised for continued growth. It wasn't easy; and Jeff will be the first to tell you so. "I had a multiple roles. I was a lender and a business manager—dealing with overhead, personnel, marketing, and IT." Jeff needed to set goals for himself while setting expectations for others; and inspiring them to be their best. Driven to be extraordinary, he turned to Anne, whom he had worked with before, because he knew that her organizational skills were off the charts and "she wouldn't let me miss a beat. She's got a no-nonsense attitude and a great sense of humor."
A relentless yet encouraging organizer, Anne held Jeff accountable through a personalized, out-of-the box plan of action that made staying on track possible. Jeff says, "With Anne, my very full cereal bowl doesn't spill over no matter how much milk is being poured." Anne's step by step, start to finish model made the difference in this very dynamic and ever-changing business environment. "Anne made me efficient. And that changed everything."
As senior management at the company, choosing Anne as a trusted outside 'partner' and confidant, made a huge difference for the company, and how its President approached his daily work life. "Anne provided an objective perspective that helped me clarify my thinking, and strengthen my communication skills. She kept me focused, which is important to my reputation." The work they did inspired productivity and a sense of purpose in the upper management of the company. "Anne's strengths and contributions continue to be essential to my business, and my life." Her dedication to me mirrors my dedication to my customers. We both want to see them succeed."
Taking Novel Medical Devices From Concept to the Global Market
Matt Lyons is responsible for creating better, healthier lives. His company, Blue Slate, develops businesses that are focused on creating ideas, innovative products, and opportunities in high-growth medical markets. Matt is involved in multiple aspects of business development: ideation, product design, manufacturing, launch, healthcare regulations, and acquisition. He has a great number of critical balls in the air, and can't let any of them fall. "I rarely have a minute to sit down and talk things through." His biggest challenge was to find the space to have the dialogue. Matt says, "I was managing everything else and needed to manage myself. Anne Weiss creates the space that lets me think."
Anne worked previously with Matt as President and CEO of Blackstone Medical. As he launched Blue Slate, the first thing she asked was, "Matt, what do you want to get out of this when you're done?" It was a defining question about purpose that drove Matt's vision. Anne and Matt identified an actionable set of goals that supported the mission. Then she and Matt strategized the execution, taking into consideration the potential obstacles. "Anne drills down to the smallest detail and sees the big picture," says Matt. "She is positive, encouraging, and demands accountability."
Blue Slate is steadily growing its portfolio of innovative medical device companies. They are also consulting and bringing their expertise to others, and helping shape their businesses. "Anne keeps me focused, tactical, and balanced. Time with her is beyond valuable. It allows me to pause, and take a snapshot of what's happening. It gives me the space to reflect and measure my effectiveness." And that is good for business.
Developing an Industry Leader
Amy Jamrog is a wealth management advisor and motivational speaker. Her passion is in helping her clients create wealth, steward their resources, and then create a philanthropic plan to direct money toward the greater good in their communities. She came to Weiss Consulting when she started her own financial consulting branch within her firm. Amy had intellect and drive, but she needed to expand her organizational capacities to produce expanded results. She needed an actionable and sustainable plan to grow her business while serving her existing clients. She also needed a smart, intuitive sounding board.
Anne armed Amy with a toolbox of manageable, step by step systems and mapped them out over a year. Not only did this measure productivity, it demanded accountability and taught Amy how to be efficient with her time. It also gave her a sense of accomplishment on a daily basis. "Anne's approach was direct, logical and inspiring. It freed me up so that the details didn't distract me from the bigger picture; I could see the future vision for the company and know it was attainable."
Amy's business grew. It doubled in the first 18 months. Then it doubled again. So did her presence in the industry. "Anne's strong knowledge of leadership development propelled me into a highly respected national speaker in the financial industry." Anne worked with Amy to help her find her voice, refine her message and deliver it with polish and strength. "Anne taught me how to be a powerful speaker," Amy says. "I don't think I could have stood up in front of an audience of 12,000 people without Anne's coaching and support. She elevated my confidence, and the message."
Raising Efficiency and Empowering Employees
Constance Howlett's team manages all the artwork for packaging components for a luxury global consumer goods company. She's responsible for leading a "heroic" team of 50, which is broken down into three groups. As a manager of multiple projects for many products, communication with all departments was both essential and difficult. Her biggest challenge was to change the perception that her department was 'always late.' Constance says, "All the time was eaten up on the front end, during development and design, which left little time for my team to do its work. We were in constant crisis mode. And always the ones to get blamed." Weiss Consulting was called in.
Anne guided Constance in the art of negotiating for more time, so that realistic expectations could be met. Since communication was difficult, Anne helped change the conversation which ultimately changed the culture of the department. Anne worked with Constance while developing and implementing an electronic system that tracked all aspects of a job, from start to finish, through all departments. "Every step was accounted for; every person was held to their task. Data was the best ally," says Constance. Anne also worked with Constance on her own goals for productivity. She devised a system which helped identify what needed to be accomplished in 30 days, 60 days, 90 days. "When I'm working with Anne, I'm at least 25% more productive. She brings everything important into focus."
Anne helped mitigate a culture of blame, and usher in one of accountability. "It transformed everything, raised efficiency, and empowered employees. It was easier for people to be willing to be accountable." Productivity soared. Deadlines were met. The working environment became one of collaboration.
Leading with Clarity and Strength
Pattie Hallberg wanted to step into her new role as CEO as a clear, focused and accountable leader; knowing that the rest of the organization would be a reflection of her own leadership qualities. "The Board of Directors looks for clarity and holds us to our goals. I needed to be ready for every meeting," says Pattie. She had never used an Executive Coach, but knew that her position required someone like Anne. She went to Weiss Consulting, based on a recommendation.
Anne helped Pattie process her thoughts and get clear with her communication-both in relation to content and to style. She also helped Pattie challenge her own thinking. Anne says "Sometimes, we get stuck in how we see things, which is why it's so important to have an outside perspective." "Anne acted as a 'living white board.' She is a safe place to not only explore new ideas, but figure out how to express them in the most effective way."
Anne's listening skills helped keep Pattie organized and focused, which enhanced productivity across the organization. "Anne is skilled at taking what one says, and boiling it down to the essence. I'll see a problem with 52 tentacles and Anne will find the spine. The spine is the issue, not the 52 other things." This made a big difference for Pattie. She didn't get sidetracked by a 'running story' which freed her up to get the job done, and excel beyond expectation for the organization she loves.
Enabling the Business to Live Forever
Julie Pokela has invested more than 37 years in building a highly regarded and successful market research firm. Most of her employees have been with her for more than 20 years, and two have been with the company for more than 30 years. While Julie does not know precisely when she wants to retire, she knows that when she does, it's critical that the company transitions smoothly and successfully—for the sake of her customers, her employees, and of course, for her own retirement security.
Julie hired Weiss Consulting to help her with succession planning. According to Julie, "When you're planning for something that is several years off, it is all too easy to let daily fires take priority over long term needs. Plus, when you're the President of the company, there is no one holding you accountable for these types of long term strategic activities." Anne helped Julie envision the future. She also identified what needed to happen in order for the company to run successfully without her, even without the current staff. "A succession plan is also a crisis plan," says Anne. The outcomes will make the company stronger regardless of when Julie decides to retire.
Julie now rests easy at night knowing that she is readying her business for her retirement. She is confident that when she decides to retire: the business will be prepared for succession; her equity will be safe; and customers and employees will be poised for a smooth transition. "I love Anne's style," says Julie. "She is easy to work with. She's hands on and personal. But, she also asks the hard questions and pushes me when I need to be pushed. Working with Anne is a good investment for any business."
